Portland Mayor Tom Potter and Oregon’s First Lady Mary Oberst helped kick off the Portland ASK Campaign (Asking Saves Kids), at a press conference at Portland City Hall on November 29, 2007. Other presenters included Kelly Rice, the ASK Chair for the Ceasefire Oregon Education Foundation; Stephanie Morgan, from the Oregon Trail Chapter of the American Red Cross; Lt. Tim Sessions of the Portland Police Department; and PAX CEO and co-founder Daniel Gross.
More than 57,000 children in Oregon live in homes with loaded guns. ASK is a public safety campaign to restrict children’s access to guns in the home and eliminate deaths and injuries caused by unintentional shootings. ASK encourages parents to protect their children by asking a very simple question: “Is there a gun where my child plays?”
The event also marked the unveiling of billboards featuring local celebrities encouraging Portland residents to ASK. The billboards, which can be seen throughout the city starting in early January, feature Congressman Earl Blumenauer, Mayor Tom Potter, DJ OSO Fresh from Z100 FM, jazz musician Tom Grant, Dr. Dana Hargunani from Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, and Blaze, the mascot for the Portland Trail Blazers.
